Privacy

Privacy notice for the Cronoscopio app for iPhone and iPad, and for the cronoscopio.it website. Updated on 29 September 2026. This is a translation of the Italian notice, which prevails in case of doubt.

Cronoscopio has no accounts, shows no advertising, uses no third-party analytics or tracking tools, and does not sell or give data to anyone. What you do with the app stays on your phone. Below, one by one, are the things that do go over the network, and why.

Location

The app asks for it only while you are using it, to know which places are in front of you and where you are looking from, and to open the map where you are. The calculation is done on the phone: your location is not sent to us or to anyone else.

The camera and your photos

In live mode the camera image is processed on the phone to recognise the outline of the mountains; it is not recorded or sent. The photos you choose in “Your photos” are read on the phone, together with their shooting data (location and direction), and do not leave the phone. The snapshots you save stay in the app's Archive; if you choose to share them or save them to Photos, you decide each time.

Maps and places

To show you aerial photos and maps, the app asks our server (cronoscopio.it) for the images of the area you are looking at, and downloads from it the places you choose to keep on your phone. When our server requests the images from the public bodies that publish them, it passes on nothing of yours: neither your address nor anything else. “Today's map”, on the other hand, comes directly from OpenFreeMap (openfreemap.org) and the relief from Mapterhorn (mapterhorn.com): like any website, those services receive the phone's IP address and the area requested.

The big screen

When you ask for an “On desktop” code, the phone sends our server the place you are looking at and, if you have bought the full version, the Apple-signed receipt of the purchase (it is used to know that you bought it; it contains neither your name nor your email). The code and the session last one hour and their data are deleted within two hours. To prevent abuse we count how many codes come from the same IP address: the address is kept only in encrypted form, and that count is also deleted within two hours.

The purchase

The full-version unlock is bought through the App Store: payment and payment details are handled by Apple, and we don't see them. The app asks Apple, on the phone, whether the account has already made the purchase.

The server's technical logs

Like any website, our server logs the requests it receives (address requested, date and time) for security and to fix faults. For the app's requests (places, map tiles) the IP address is written truncated: the network is kept, not the device. These logs are used for nothing else, are not linked to any person and are deleted after seven days.

Who is responsible

Giorgio Di Falco. For any question about this data, or to request its deletion: info@cronoscopio.it.
